Well it seems as if the sales charts for 2009 game sales have been on the decline compared to previous years. Kinda a big punch to the gut for publishers. Many say that the console makers, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are planning for a new console release very soon to help give game sales a push. However, according to Mr. optimistic analyst Micheal Pachter’s estimations, he says that there will be no complete new consoles at least until freakin’ 2013. Pachter’s main argument is that publishers would not welcome a new platform, because they have spent so much time and even more money on the current generation of consoles. The only somewhat new console he said would be the high-definition Wii, which he estimates, if it’s ever released, to come out in 2010.
I fully agree with Pachter’s point, but I also think that the primary reason Microsoft and Nintendo won’t have a new console is that they are making lots of profit even years later after launch, and showing no large signs of slow-down (also I think that Microsoft wants to put off buying a blu-ray license for as long as possible. Considering the next Xbox will probably have to have a Blu-Ray disc player, and that Sony is really their main comepetion in the video game realm). So why make a new console if the current one is still making bank? Sony on the other hand has been suffering. I have no clue why they aren’t doing something to save the Playstation. Either make a whole new console, make a cheaper version of the current one, or do a software makeover similar to the new Xbox Live experience. Yeah Sony you may have the best hardware in a console, it may be designed to last ten years, and it may have a fancy Blu-Ray player, but if that makes the cost insane no one will buy it (Especially in this economic crisis that may have been partially the fault of a president whose name I will not mention. Hint: he looks like a monkey).
Anyway, looks like there won’t be any new consoles to drool over for some time.
