Fallout 3: The Pitt Review

By massy

Where to begin? Well this is a brilliant add-on to a brilliant game. While fallout three was more about good and evil, and had less shades of grey. The Pitt is all about exploring the shades of grey. Which is an excellent addition onto this wonderful game.

First, the expansion pack gives you a silenced assault rifle, loads of new clothing, an axe that rotates (think like a more BA version of the ripper), a new laser rifle (really just a special laser rifle), and a host of special weapons that are an improvement on the older ones. You also get 4 new enemies, Trogs (mutated humans), Wildmen (crazy humans), Pitt raiders (work for Ashur), and Slave Fighters.

There’s a very fun mini-game sorta thing where you find these things called steel ingots (much like looking for the briefcases in operation anchorage, except there are 100 steel ingots), and every 5-10 you find you get armor, weapons, and stimpacks/drugs. I find this very entertaining because I love to search for hidden things and Bethesda hides there very well. As you turn more in you get better and better equipment, like the new special laser rifle The Metal Blaster, The Mauler (a better auto-axe, also an improvement on the Man Opener), The Perforator (an improved silence assault rifle (which is called an infiltrator)), and many different types of armor.

Now onto the background of the story, don’t read if you don’t want to know. You’re informed by Wernher that the Pitt is a city that used to be known as Pittsburg, and while it wasn’t actually hit by any nuclear bombs, its river was completely irradiated and caused weird mutations in the people living there. Some became Wildmen, men who went crazy and attack anything they see, others became worse, known as Trogs, who just eat, sleep, and have sex. But then The Brotherhood of Steel came in and did what was called “The Scourge” where they wiped out the raider force occupying the town, a great many of the Trogs, and many of the Wildmen. How the slavers and raiders came to control the town and gather slaves, is something you learn about in game.

Now the game itself is very fun, the new quest is a great addition, and it explores even more grey areas than Fallout 3. The only problem I had with it was there are many minor glitches, I didn’t experience any major ones, but there were a lot of graphical glitches, the train yard when you first enter the pit had an odd graphical glitch, sometimes grass will float. I didn’t have any game ruining glitches but that was one of the bad things I had to say about this DLC.

Now is it worth your money, the real question. I would say yes, this is a much better DLC package than Operation Anchorage. Whereas Operation Anchorage was just a dumb simulation that didn’t even go into Anchorage, The Pitt is real with all of the consequences that come with it. You get a few new perks that are very helpful when facing radiation and using auto-axes, and I mean seriously, you make some pretty heavy choices without knowing the full story. I would say if you like Fallout 3 even a little bit, it is definitely worth your $10. This get to thumbs and 2 feet way up.   Cheesy

Pros: Great addition to the game, about 2-5 hours depending on play style, more story, new weapons, new armor, fun mini game, new people, new area, whats not to love? and a freakin delicious SILENCED ASSAULT RIFLE, I like that the best.

Cons: Graphics glitches, some problems with scripting causing Ashur to not talk to you, and I’ve read about some game killing glitches, although a majority of them have been fixed.

Score: 9/10 A great addition but could’ve used more work to fix these glitches.
